Senior management of both franchises have reportedly agreed on the core terms.
The Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) are in advanced negotiations for a blockbuster player swap ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season.
According to a report published in Sportstar, the proposed deal would see India all-rounder Hardik Pandya move to the Ricky Ponting-coached PBKS. In exchange, premier Indian left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh and wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod are expected to join MI.
Senior management of both teams have reportedly agreed on the core terms. The necessary documentation is awaiting standard review and processing by the IPL officials.
A formal declaration is highly anticipated in the coming days, well ahead of the revised IPL retention deadline on November 17.
The report further stated that the initial trade proposal originated from a senior MI official as the franchise looks to reset its squad dynamic.
Before closing in on negotiations with the PBKS, the five-time champions had explored trade options with at least three other franchises, including Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In fact, KKR’s discussions with MI had reportedly reached an advanced stage, with a potential multi-player deal.
With Punjab Kings successfully stepping into advanced negotiations to acquire Hardik, it remains to be seen whether KKR will throw hat into the trade rings again.
Coming to Hardik Pandya, he returned to Mumbai Indians in the leadership capacity ahead of the IPL 2024 season. However, he was booed at MI's home ground, the Wankhede Stadium, primarily because he replaced the legendary and beloved captain, Rohit Sharma.
The booing intensified as MI struggled on the field, finishing at the very bottom of the points table in 2024. Though the team reached the playoffs in 2025, further struggles in 2026 led to calls for his removal from the captaincy role.
In IPL 2026, MI finished ninth on the 10-team points table with just 4 wins from 14 matches. On a personal front, Hardik endured a below-par IPL 2026 season for MI, scoring 206 runs at an average of 22.89 and a strike rate of 138.25. It was one of the lowest-scoring seasons of his career, with a top score of just 40. His impact with the ball was severely limited as he managed to pick up just 4 wickets during the tournament.
Additionally, the ace all-rounder had to sit out a few crucial games during the latter half of the season, notably dealing with recurring back spasms.
