Delhi Capitals haven't made it into the IPL playoffs since 2021.
Vaas, who was part of Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning squad, has already reportedly joined DC’s preparatory camp in New Delhi. Vaas played 111 Tests, 322 ODIs, and 6 T20Is, taking 355, 400, and 6 T20I wickets, respectively. He also scored 3089 Test runs and 2025 ODIs runs.
Times of India reported that DC had also held talks with India legends Anil Kumble and Zaheer Khan, but the talks fell through.
“Talks had progressed with Zaheer to advanced levels. The franchise had approached Kumble as well, but terms of appointment couldn’t be reached," the publication quoted a source as saying.
Vaas is one more high-profile name joining DC’s coaching staff, as Yuvraj Singh has also reportedly joined as assistant coach. Legendary India batter and captain Sourav Ganguly is set to be named the head coach of the DC franchise. Former India spinner Amit Mishra is also said to be part of this new setup.
Since leading the points table in 2021, DC has not reached the playoffs. They managed seven victories and as many losses in the 2026 Indian Premier League, finishing sixth. DC made a huge trade in the IPL transfer window, as they traded Kuldeep Yadav to the Lucknow Super Giants and got Rishabh Pant back in return.
