Stephen Fleming recently parted ways with CSK, ending his 18-year association with the franchise.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have delayed any potential trade discussions for Hardik Pandya until they finalize their new coaching staff, following Stephen Fleming's exit.
The five-time champions are actively searching for a new head coach after Fleming's legendary tenure ended last month.
“We have not started applying our minds on this. First, we will have a coach. We have got calls from many interested candidates. We will sit and finalise,” CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Viswanathan and director Rupa Gurunath will consult MS Dhoni and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad before appointing a new coach. The franchise is believed to favour an overseas appointment.
According to Cricbuzz, CSK will only evaluate a move for Pandya if the Mumbai Indians skipper remains available for trade after a head coach is named.
While Fleming succeeded Brendon McCullum as England Test head coach, the latter continues to manage England's white-ball setups.
Both former New Zealand captains share a close bond and deep ties to Chennai. Hence, speculation links McCullum to the vacant CSK coaching position, particularly amid indications that the England and Wales Cricket Board could be open to letting its national coaches take up IPL assignments during specific, non-conflicting windows.
Despite the heavy rumours, no formal approach has been made by CSK to McCullum or that Fleming is playing a part in bringing his compatriot back to Chennai. For now, CSK's priority remains appointing their coach.
Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya is recovering and building full fitness at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Mumbai Indians have not committed to trade their captain or retain him.
However, multiple reports suggest that CSK, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) might get into a trading war to secure Pandya’s services.
