Australia ODI and Test captain and Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins wished Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was still in high school so that he didn’t have to bowl to him. This praise came after Sooryavanshi scored 776 runs at a strike rate of 236.30 in IPL 2026, hitting 72 sixes in 16 games for Rajasthan Royals.

He won the Orange Cap for most runs, the MVP Award, and the Emerging Player award amongst the plethora of accolades he received for his brilliant batting. The highlight was his 29-ball 97 against Cummins’ SRH in the Eliminator, as he slammed 12 sixes to power RR into the Qualifier 2, where they lost to Gujarat Titans.

Sooryavanshi faced and defeated some of the best bowlers in the world of cricket, including Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Jasprit Bumrah, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. At first look, his brazen approach could seem dangerous, yet there is a clear strategy behind the aggression—a trait that has helped him succeed and remain consistent.

The Australian captain recognized the difficulty of bowling to a batter who combines power and extraordinary confidence at such a young age after witnessing the young player destroy some of the finest bowling attacks in the world throughout the season.

"He's a talent. He hits the ball a long way; he hits very hard. Margins for error are very small. He's a real talent, pretty tough to bowl to,” Cummins said on Fox Cricket.

Before praising the young player's exceptional ball-striking abilities, the Australian captain made a joke about wishing Sooryavanshi was still in high school rather than dissecting some elite bowlers.

"Pretty much, and wishing he was in high school, so I didn't have to bowl at him. It's just incredible. Like, I don't think I've seen batting like that, let alone from a 15-year-old kid. Whether he's 30 or 15, he's just a very good hitter of the ball," he added.

Cummins also admitted that he was blown away by the young Indian’s talent.

I’d say (the mood in India) is still a little bit of disbelief. I think he’s got enough credits now that he’s not just a flash in the pan. He’s a real talent. He’s just a really good hitter of the ball. He’s clearing (the boundary) by 20 or 30 metres, so your margins for error become really small when someone is that strong and has got so many options. He’s really impressive," Cummins told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Sooryavanshi was named in India A’s squad for the one-day tri-series in Sri Lanka, also involving Afghanistan A. Since he has done so well in the IPL 2026, it would not be surprising if he is selected for India’s upcoming two-match T20I series in Ireland and the five-match T20I series in England.
