Sooryavanshi became the first batter to score 500 runs in powerplay overs in one IPL edition.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (1) and Dhruv Jurel (7) fell early, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi decided to play more carefully. He still managed 96 in 47 balls with 8 fours and 7 sixes to his name. Ravindra Jadeja made 45*, and Donovan Ferreira made 38* in 11 balls to power RR to 214/6 in 20 overs.
Sooryavanshi was coming into the game fresh off a 29-ball 93-run knock and looked the same touch, but with lots of maturity in this innings, as wickets fell around him on a slowish surface. One shot of Sooryavanshi stood out.
It was the third ball of the 17th over by Jason Holder, who bowled the delivery short outside Sooryavanshi’s off-stump. Sooryavanshi, instead of hitting it on the leg-side, played a shot similar to a tennis forehand, and sent the ball sailing over the long-off boundary.
