Akash Singh of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) made life hell for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batters in his first game of the IPL 2026. This match was played on May 15, 2026, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow.

LSG won the toss and chose to bowl first. CSK openers Sanju Samson (20) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (13) attempted to give CSK a very good start. But then Pant introduced left-arm seamer Akash Singh into the attack, and he dismissed both the openers for cheap.

He also accounted for the dangerous Urvil Patel for 6 runs. He finished his four-over quota with 3/26. What was notable during his spell was that he displayed a note from his pocket and pointed towards his head in celebration all three times he picked a wicket.

CSK managed 187/5 thanks to 71 from Kartik Sharma and late blitzes from Dewald Brevis (25) and Shivam Dube (32*).

After the CSK innings, Akash Singh talked to the official broadcasters and revealed the secret behind his note and his mindset.

“I know I express myself well, and people tell me that too. But honestly, it’s about the environment you create around yourself. I spend time understanding how champions think and how champions work hard.

On that note, I had written things like ‘Akki knows how to take wickets in T20 cricket.' It just motivates me during the game. Sometimes these things work, and sometimes they don’t, but if something helps me stay motivated and helps me perform better, then I’m willing to do it,” Akash told broadcasters in a mid-innings interview.

The joy of a player who had been waiting all season for his opportunity was reflected in the celebration. Akash further revealed his preparation focused equally on skills and mentality.

My mindset is always about getting big wickets because when you come to the IPL, you shouldn’t just come to play — you should come to dominate. You need to stay one step ahead skill-wise, but at the same time, the mental side matters a lot. If you don’t dominate mentally in this game, you can’t move forward consistently.

When you are not playing regularly in the IPL, you have to keep pushing yourself constantly. Throughout the season and even in the off-season, I kept working hard,” he concluded.

In response, Mitchell Marsh just tore apart the CSK bowling lineup. He hammered 90 in 38 balls with 9 fours and 7 sixes, which included four consecutive maximums in an over to Anshul Kamboj. Josh Inglis made 36, adding 135 runs for the first wicket with Marsh for LSG.

In the end, Nicholas Pooran smashed 32* in 17 balls with 4 sixes and one four to give LSG a win by 7 wickets in 16.4 overs. He achieved the win by smashing four consecutive sixes to Anshul Kamboj, who went for 63 runs in 2.4 overs.
