Virat Kohli bounced back from consecutive ducks in the previous two matches with a classy unbeaten hundred as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by six wickets in their IPL 2026 clash in Raipur on Wednesday (May 13).

Chasing 193 for victory, the ace batter smashed 105* off 60 balls with the help of 11 fours and three sixes to take RCB over the finishing line with five deliveries to spare.

After the game, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Kohli for responding to criticism with a match-winning century.

Gavaskar said Kohli’s record-extending ninth IPL ton proved that experience and class still remain unmatched in modern T20 cricket.

“Virat Kohli was absolutely outstanding against KKR. He knows how to construct a chase better than most," Gavaskar said on Star Sports’ ‘Amul Cricket Live’.

“While everyone was talking about this being the season of ‘Gen Next’, Kohli showed he is still around. He silenced the doubters with a century and moved to third in the Orange Cap race. He proved that the old generation is still the best,” he added.

During his knock, Virat Kohli became the first Indian and only the sixth player overall to cross 14,000 runs in T20 cricket. He achieved this feat in just 409 innings, making him the fastest ever, surpassing Chris Gayle's record of 423 innings.

Gavaskar highlighted Kohli’s extraordinary consistency in T20 cricket, citing that his records could stand for years.

“When it comes to T20 centuries, he is third on the list with 10, behind Chris Gayle and Babar Azam. But he is the fastest to 14,000 T20 runs and has nine IPL hundreds. Records are there to be broken, but it will take a very long time for anyone to match what Kohli keeps delivering, game after game, season after season," Gavaskar stated.

“This hundred from Virat Kohli was one of those special moments that remind us of his greatness," he remarked.
