Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has attributed the dip in form of top Indian fast bowlers in IPL 2026, specifically mentioning Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, to mental fatigue resulting from a relentless international schedule and franchise commitments.

Bumrah is experiencing a career-worst IPL 2026 campaign for Mumbai Indians (MI). In 10 matches so far, he has taken just three wickets at a highly unusual bowling average of 109.66 and an economy rate of 8.89.

On the other hand, Arshdeep has endured an inconsistent campaign for Punjab Kings (PBKS), alternating between brilliant spells and expensive, wicket-less phases. The left-arm quick has claimed 10 wickets in 11 matches, with a high economy rate of 10.42, struggling particularly with run containment in the death overs.

While doing commentary in the SRH vs PBKS clash on Wednesday (May 6), Shastri emphasized that these players are "human" and the constant grind eventually affects performance.

“Just seeing the way the season has panned out, and seeing some of the established bowlers who’ve played a lot of cricket through the season, played for India, played World Cups, all this stuff... showing signs of mental fatigue,” Shastri said on-air.

“Now, you must remember these guys are human. And it does take its toll. It’s not that they can, on a day off, go to a petrol station, fill some gas and get into the groove again the next day. It doesn’t happen that way. Human beings need time to recover. But it’s a hard grind. Then again, it’s professional sport,” he added.

Despite their recent struggles, Bumrah and Arshdeep remain central to India’s plans. Both of them played a key role in the T20 World Cup title defence earlier this year.

Bumrah and Arshdeep are expected to be rested for India’s home series (one Test and three ODIs) against Afghanistan post the IPL 2026.
