Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) suffered a six-wicket defeat against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 47 of the IPL 2026 season at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday (May 4).

After being put in to bat first, LSG posted a massive 228/5, driven by quickfire contributions from Nicholas Pooran (63 off 21) and Mitchell Marsh (44 off 25). Despite a blazing powerplay, the visitors lost momentum in the middle overs and managed only 68 runs in the last 8 overs of the innings.

In reply, MI chased down the formidable target in 18.4 overs, anchored by a massive 143-run opening partnership between Ryan Rickelton (83 off 32) and the returning Rohit Sharma (84 off 44).

Reflecting on the defeat, LSG skipper Rishabh Pant felt his team started well but didn't quite reach the winning total needed for the flat Wankhede wicket.

"Definitely, the way we started, I think we should have gotten more runs. But definitely some good signs. Can't say that. Definitely the boys played freely, but in the end, I think they bowled well because they are used to these conditions, for sure. See, definitely, we were short 10-15 runs because it was a 220-230 wicket for sure," Pant said in the post-match interview.

Pant defended the LSG bowlers, stating they have been doing a "fantastic job" and were playing on a difficult bowling track.

“The way we started, we had that edge over them. But at the same time, in a wicket like this, you can't blame bowlers all the time. They've been doing a fantastic job for us. So definitely can't say much to them, for sure,” he added.

Rishabh Pant noted the team needs "some good luck" and "blessings" to turn around results, alongside increased effort.

“I think we need some good luck, man. That's the only thing I'm going to say. Yeah, I think a lot of blessing is going to work around it. And it's going to take some more effort from us, for sure,” he remarked.

With this loss, LSG remain rooted to the bottom (10th place) of the IPL 2026 team standings, with 4 points from 9 matches and a poor NRR of -1.076. This defeat, their 7th of the season, has put them in a near-elimination scenario.
