CSK's viral jersey launch video has contained songs, dialogues and background tracks from Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer and Jailer 2.
Ahead of the IPL 2026 season, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have landed in legal trouble for using songs, dialogues and background tracks from the Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer and Jailer 2, in their now-edited viral jersey launch video.
According to a report published in The Indian Express, the Sun TV Network Limited -- the owners of SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) -- which produced the movie, filed a copyright infringement suit against CSK on Friday (March 13), dragging the five-time IPL champions into the Madras High Court.
Earlier this month, CSK’s social media team released a promotional video as they launched their new playing kit for the upcoming season, using audio and background scores from Rajnikanth’s movies.
Hours after it went viral on the internet, the franchise removed the post and re-released it with audio modifications.

Taking note of this, the Sun TV Network Limited took legal action against CSK. As per the publication, the findings of the complaint lodged against CSK reads, “The Plaintiff submits that the Defendants (CSK) officially unveiled the new jersey for the IPL 2026 on 01.03.2026, offering fans a glimpse of the fresh design through a promotional video shared on social media pages, namely Instagram, X, YouTube and Facebook. The said video, to the surprise of the applicant, prominently used the audio tracks and dialogues from Plaintiff’s films Jailer, Jailer 2 and Coolie and further incorporated copyrighted audio elements at multiple junctures, including scenes depicting the arrival of MS Dhoni at the 1st Defendants' camp.”
The film production house also informed the court that each jersey was sold for Rs 2,399 and the petitioner’s copyright works were used for making commercial gains without approval.
“The Applicant submits that the promotional videos mischievously exploited the Applicant’s copyrighted works for aiding the sales of the Match Jersey 2026 priced at Rs 2399 and other merchandise. It is needless to state the influence effect of the music from films involving Mr Rajinikanth and Mr Anirudh would have in aiding the merchandise sales of a team based in South India and more particularly Chennai.”
The report also stated that the Plaintiff has urged the court to block CSK from using their copyrighted material. The Sun TV has also demanded that CSK reveal how much money they made by using the unauthorised audio. Although the Chennai-based franchise has used similar soundtracks in the past, they have refrained from using them for all new content since this legal dispute began.
While all franchises have been using movie soundtracks for their social media content, this is the first instance where an IPL team has been dragged to court for copyright infringement.
