Yashasvi Jaiswal has 285 runs in 6 ODIs with two centuries to his name.
Aakash Chopra, former India opener, has discussed how many opportunities young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal might get in the upcoming ODI series between India and the West Indies. Chopra said Jaiswal will most likely continue waiting for his chance.
The first of the three ODIs between India and the West Indies will be played on September 27, and Chopra feels there is no room to give Jaiswal an opportunity in the series.
After missing the England trip, the explosive opener rejoined the team, although he is still the backup behind veteran Rohit Sharma and skipper Shubman Gill.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has only played in six ODIs thus far, despite making his debut more than eighteen months ago. With a strike rate of 97.60 and an average of 71.25, he has maximized his opportunities, scoring 285 runs.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is still firmly a backup option in the present scheme of things, with rumors about Rohit Sharma's international future fading and his successful opening pair with Shubman Gill continuing to flourish.
"How many white-ball matches will Yashasvi Jaiswal get? He won't get many opportunities. Although he seems like a tempting option, for him to be in the playing XI, Shubman Gill will have to play out of position. What are we trying to achieve? The Indian team will have to ask themselves that. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill also need to open together for a long period of time," Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
"Yes, you wish to prepare Yashasvi Jaiswal and keep him ready as the third opener. But is he going to be there? Will you be able to give him chances? There are not many ODIs, and he is not getting a place in the T20I side as it is. So then, how will it work? When there are limited ODIs, Rohit Sharma will play for sure, and so will Shubman Gill. So how will Yashasvi Jaiswal open? This is an unfortunate fact," he added.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was seen practicing in the nets along with other Indian players ahead of the first ODI that will be played at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.
Jaiswal last played for India in Afghanistan ODIs, after Virat Kohli was ruled out due to an injury and scored a brilliant 110 in the third ODI. However, Jaiswal was dropped right after his second ODI hundred, as he did not make the cut for the subsequent away series against England.
