India's three-ODI series against the West Indies will overlap with the Asian Games.
The BCCI Men’s Selection Committee on Wednesday (September 16) announced India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming home ODI series against the West Indies, starting September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram.
With the Asian Games in Japan running from September 24 to October 3, overlapping directly with all three West Indies ODIs, the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah were unavailable for selection. This forced the selectors to consider alternatives.
Following India's 3-0 T20I series sweep against Afghanistan, India head coach Gautam Gambhir noted the disadvantage of lacking a full-strength squad for building consistency under young captain Shubman Gill with little over a year remaining for the ODI World Cup in Africa.
"Look, it's not ideal. Obviously, we know that it's not ideal when we are preparing for a World Cup, which is in years' time. But again, the Asian Games squad was selected long back," Gambhir told reporters.
"You want your best players to play as much as possible because the next World Cup is a 50-over World Cup. And more importantly, it's not fair on a young captain as well if he doesn't get the best team, playing consistently and regularly and not being on the path consistently.
"That's why I have to be dead honest. I think it is important for Shubman [Gill] to get the best team as many times as he can in red ball and in white ball formats as well," he added.
The scheduling clash paved the way for Punjab all-rounder Naman Dhir and Jammu & Kashmir seamer Auqib Nabi to earn their maiden ODI call-ups.
In Iyer’s absence, KL Rahul has been named the vice-captain. This vacancy also opened up a selection door for Ruturaj Gaikwad in the middle-order. Kishan’s unavailability created the window for Dhruv Jurel’s inclusion as a backup wicketkeeper-batter behind Rahul.
To balance out remaining gaps -- particularly with senior all-rounder Hardik Pandya still recovering from injuries -- the team management also pulled seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy out of the Asian Games contingent to reinforce the ODI squad.
While Gambhir acknowledged that navigating split squads is not an ideal scenario, he views this as a vital opportunity to broaden India's white-ball talent pool and test how these younger prospects handle the international arena.
"Sometimes it's difficult for the selectors when they have to put the best squad in place. So, we always knew that if the best team goes to the best, the front-line players go to the Asian Games.
"Obviously, we will have to probably compromise a bit in this one-day series against West Indies. But again, it gives other people the opportunity as well. And obviously, in a series like this, we've got young guys like Naman Dhir, Auqib [Nabi], getting those opportunities in this squad. So, they can also show what they bring in white ball format," the coach remarked.
