Kohli's fan was detained for invading the pitch during the first India versus South Africa ODI.
Murmu, a college student from Arambagh in Hooghly, was taken into custody by local police, leaving his family worried. The fan’s father, Samar Murmu, said that the family had also reached out to several authorities in hopes of securing his son’s release.
In the end, Kohli came to the rescue of his die-hard supporter, calling officials and requesting that Shouvik be sent back home, according to a report in ABP Ananda.
After returning home on Wednesday (December 3), Shouvik narrated the details himself: “The police had detained me at a station, I cannot remember which one exactly. But once Kohli sir called and spoke to them, I was released."
He explained, “After the police released me, my family could not reach me right away, so I had to spend the night at a hotel before arrangements were made for me to return home."
During the IPL 2025 season, Shouvik Murmu cycled to Bengaluru and camped out, hoping to catch a glimpse of Kohli but could not meet his favorite cricketer. He also made his way to Kohli’s residence, but his effort went in vain again.
Finally, on Sunday, Shouvik’s relished his dream as he ran onto the field just as Kohli completed his hundred and fell at the legendary cricketer’s feet.
Virat Kohli continued his prolific form in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa as he slammed his 53rd century and second consecutive on Wednesday. He followed up his dazzling 135 (120 balls) in Ranchi with a brilliant 102 (93 balls) in Raipur.
With the series currently poised at 1-1, the third and final ODI will take place in Visakhapatnam on Saturday (December 6).
