India has been clean swept in Test series at home twice in two years.
The Indian team was handed their second Test series clean sweep in two years, as they lost the two-Test series to South Africa 0-2. This came as South Africa handed them a downright thrashing by 408 runs in the second and final Test in Guwahati.
South Africa had bounced back from early wickets to post 489 runs in the first innings, after Temba Bavuma won the toss and batted first. Senuran Muthuswamy made 109 runs, and Marco Jansen made 93 runs.
India hoped to overhaul the total and take a decent lead after openers KL Rahul (22) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (58) added 65 runs for the first wicket. But then Marco Jansen ran through the Indian batting with figures of 6/48 and demolished the hosts for 201 runs, as Washington Sundar’s 48 helped a bit.
South Africa decided to bat in the second innings and posted 260/5, with Tristan Stubbs making 94 and Tony de Zorzi scoring 49 runs. South Africa set India the huge task of chasing down a 549-run target in the second innings.
But India lost two wickets on day two, and the fall of wickets continued as India was bowled out for 140 runs, as Simon Harmer took 6/37 as South Africa won the game by 408 runs.
This is the biggest defeat in Tests for India in terms of runs, and with this loss, India also lost the series 0-2. The last time South Africa won a Test series in India was in 2000, when the Hansie Cronje-led side thrashed India by 2-0.
Marco Jansen won the Player of the Match, and Simon Harmer won the Player of the Series.
The Indian cricket fraternity was critical of the Indian team’s performance in the Test and the series and shared their reactions on social media.
