Gill sustained neck injury while batting in the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens.
India skipper Shubman Gill, who is not featuring in the ongoing second Test versus South Africa in Guwahati due to a neck injury, wasn’t available for selection for the upcoming three-ODI series against the same opposition as the BCCI selectors announced squad on Sunday (November 23).
Gill sustained the injury while batting in the first Test at Eden Gardens. He batted just three balls in the first innings and did not walk out in India's second dig.
The 26-year-old was initially suspected to have picked up a mild sprain, but it turned out to be a bit more serious and required specialist intervention at a hospital in Kolkata.
Now, a report published in TOI claims that Gill could well check into the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) on either December 1 or December 2 -- a week before the T20I series against South Africa gets underway in Cuttack.
According to the report, Gill is currently resting following a roadmap set by Dr Abhay Nene, Spine Specialist in Mumbai, and BCCI medical team.
The report further stated that Shubman Gill’s participation in the T20I series is still uncertain and all options will be explored by the Indian team management. Alongside being the captain of the ODI and Test team, Gill is also India's vice-captain in T20Is and a key part of the T20 World Cup 2026 plans.
While Gill would mostly be in Mumbai for the coming week, there is a possibility of him going to Chandigarh before taking the flight to Bengaluru.
In his absence, Rishabh Pant is leading India in Guwahati Test whereas KL Rahul has been appointed captain for the ODI series starting on November 30 in Ranchi.
