Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa.
Shubman Gill, the injured India captain, will miss the second Test against South Africa due to the neck sprain he suffered in the first match in Kolkata. The second Test will be played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati from November 22 onwards.
Vice-captain Rishabh Pant will take over captaincy duties for the second Test.
Shubman Gill had played three balls in India’s first innings in the Kolkata Test and held his neck after playing a sweep shot. The physio attended Gill, who decided to retire hurt. Gill was admitted to the hospital, and on the third morning, the BCCI confirmed that Gill won’t be taking part in the Test.
India went on to lose the match by 30 runs, after getting dismissed for 93 in a chase of 124 on a pitch with uneven bounce.
Gill was discharged from the hospital and even traveled to Guwahati with the Indian team, and reports stated that he wanted to play the second game as the series stands 0-1.
And now the BCCI has confirmed that Shubman Gill won’t be participating in the second Test.
“Team India captain Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa, has been ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati.
Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day's play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. He travelled to Guwahati on 19th November, 2025.
Unfortunately, he was not fully fit to feature in the 2nd Test and will head to Mumbai for further assessment of his injury. Rishabh Pant will lead the team in the 2nd Test in Gill's absence,” the BCCI statement read.
