Mohammad Shami last played for India in Tests in 2023 WTC final at the Oval.
India was bowled out for 93 runs in their chase of a 124-run target as the hosts fell prey once again to their own spin trap at home. This was India’s 4th Test defeat in 8 games at home since Gautam Gambhir took over. This includes a 0-3 white wash at the hands of New Zealand.
With India's limited bowling depth exposed and the pitch under fire, Ganguly believes the solution lies in relying on the experienced fast-bowling trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Shami.
Shami, who last played a Test in the 2023 World Test Championship final, has been left out of the red-ball squad despite a fantastic Champions Trophy return and good Ranji Trophy results. He has 17 wickets in four matches this season and is totally fit following a lengthy injury break.
Ganguly stressed that India must rebuild around their strongest pacers rather than chase short-term fixes.
“He must have faith in Bumrah, Siraj, and Shami. I think Shami deserves a place in this Test team. Shami and the spinners will win Tests for him [Gautam Gambhir],” Ganguly told Sports Tak.
Ganguly also delivered a sharp message to coach Gambhir regarding India's pitch preparation and warned that India cannot hope to win Test matches without solid batting foundations.
“Play on good wickets. If his batters aren't putting up 350–400, he will not win Tests. He must play on good wickets. And trust his people. And win Tests in five days — not in three,” Ganguly added.
He also emphasized ahead of the series that the selectors should not overlook the 35-year-old.
Speaking to PTI, Ganguly emphasized Shami's form and fitness and said: “Shami is bowling exceptionally well… I really don't see any reason why he can't keep playing Tests, ODIs, and T20s. The skill is enormous.”
The second Test of the series will be played in Guwahati from November 22 onwards.
