New Zealand was asked to bat first and posted 300/8 in 50 overs.
Shubman Gill won the toss and chose that India would bowl first. India opted to go with three pacers and three spinners. Shreyas Iyer also made his India return after recovering from his spleen injury.
Devon Conway (56) and Henry Nicholls (62) gave New Zealand a good start, adding 117 runs for the first wicket, and then Daryl Mitchell top-scored with 84 in 71 balls with five fours and three sixes.
Virat Kohli was seen enjoying his time in the middle, and one of the examples came in the 34th over when Kuldeep Yadav outfoxed Glenn Phillips.
Kuldeep enticed Phillips into a drive, which he edged to Shreyas Iyer at point after captain Shubman Gill put up a leg-side field. The vice-captain easily made the catch, but he had to step forward and drop to the ground. In front of Iyer, Kohli pretended to be a snake charmer while making jokes about it during the team meeting.
