India ended day one on 86/4 in reply to New Zealand's 235 runs.
Tom Latham’s luck with the toss continued as he chose to bat first. Will Young (71), Daryl Mitchell (82), and Tom Latham (28) were the main run-getters for New Zealand as they were bundled out for 235 runs.
For India, Ravindra Jadeja starred with 5/65 while Washington Sundar picked 4/81, with Akash Deep taking one wicket as well.
In reply, Rohit Sharma’s poor form continued as he was out for 18 runs and then Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was looking in good form, suffered a brain fade as his reverse sweep attempt to Ajaz Patel saw him losing his leg-stump for 30 runs.
Then the Gautam Gambhir-led Indian team management shocked everyone by sending Mohammed Siraj at no.4 as night watchman, but Siraj was trapped LBW on the first ball he faced by Patel. And to make things worse, Siraj also used up a review.
India expected Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill to take the team to stumps and Kohli started well with a boundary. However, his eagerness to rotate strike hurt India further.
On the 3rd ball of the 19th over, Kohli hit Ajaz Patel towards mid-on and called for a quick single. In reality, the fielder was very close and Kohli had misjudged the run. Matt Henry picked up the ball and hit the stumps directly.
Kohli tried to dive to make his ground, but the direct hit caught him short of the crease and he was run out by the TV umpires after multiple replays.

This meant that India ended day one on 86/4 with Shubman Gill on 31* and Rishabh Pant having just opened his account.
