Abhishek Sharma | BCCIYoung India batter Abhishek Sharma slammed an explosive hundred in the fifth T20I against England at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Sunday (February 2).

Opening the innings, the southpaw launched a brutal attack on the English bowlers right from the outset. He reached his half-century off 17 balls – the second-fastest fifty for India in Men's T20Is.

Sharma continued his carnage and notched up his second T20I ton off 37 deliveries, which happens to be the second-fastest hundred for India in the shortest format.

Thanks to his 135 off 54 balls, featuring seven boundaries and 13 sixes, the Men in Blue racked up a mammoth 247/9 on the board.

Abhishek Sharma's whirlwind knock was duly appreciated by his mentor Yuvraj Singh. “Well played @IamAbhiSharma4! That's where I want to see you! Proud of you,” Yuvraj tweeted.

After India’s 150-run victory in the match, Abhishek said he was delighted to see a message from Yuvraj that didn't end with a threat of getting 'hit by a chappal.'

"I think this is the first time Yuvraj has tweeted something without adding 'I will send a chappal.' Finally, he is proud of me. So I'm very happy," Abhishek stated.

"Three years ago, when I started working with him, he always told me that, as a player, doubts are natural. But he always reassured me, saying, 'You will be there, and you will perform. You will win matches for India,'" he added.

The left-hander also said Yuvraj always told him that he was preparing him for the long run.

"I remember during our training camp in COVID times, he repeatedly told me, 'don’t think short-term. I’m preparing you for the long run.' Now that things are coming together, I am really happy," Abhishek recalled.

Coming to the match, England’s innings folded for a paltry 97 in 10.3 overs in reply to India’s gigantic total. Philip Salt (55) and Jacob Bethell (10) were the only two players who managed to reach double figures.
