Surya has registered scores of 0, 12, and 14 in the T20I series against England so far.
Invited to bat first, the visitors posted 171/9 on the board, courtesy of Ben Duckett’s 51 off 28 balls and Liam Livingstone’s 43 off 24 balls.
In reply, the hosts were restricted to 145/9 in 20 overs. It was a disappointing show with the bat as only Hardik Pandya managed to touch the 40-run mark.
After the game, former England cricketer Michael Vaughan advised India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav to adopt a measured approach at the crease.
According to Vaughan, Suryakumar's tendency to attack too early has backfired in the ongoing T20I series so far. The dynamic right-hander has registered scores of 0, 12, and 14 in the first three matches. His dismissals have largely been a result of mistimed attacking shots, either edging the ball behind or mis-hitting it into the air.
"It's a few times on the trot where he's been getting out to quite soft dismissals. When you say be aggressive all the time, it's choosing the right ball to be aggressive to. Clearly you can't hit every single ball to the boundary and some of these players in this era, they've got so much skill and talent that they think they can. It's just not possible," Vaughan said while speaking on Cricbuzz.
"For India to come back, and I'm sure they will, they're not going to play any worse, I can't imagine in a few days time, but it will need maybe Sky (Suryakumar Yadav) just saying, 'okay, I just need to about 15 balls to give myself in, get myself in, look at the dimensions of the ground'. He's got the game to just go and explode into the boundary hitting mode that wind that we know that he can," he added.
Mystery Varun Chakaravarthy’s sensational figures of 5 for 24 in 4 overs helped the hosts restrict England to 171/9 in the first innings in Rajkot. However, it went in vain as the Indian batting line-up collapsed in the chase that ensued.
Apart from Surya, Sanju Samson (3) and Abhishek Sharma (24) were dismissed in the powerplay while the in-form Tilak Varma (18) couldn’t add anything substantial either.
Hardik Pandya fought hard to keep India in the contest, but struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking at a consistent pace. In the end, England managed to defend the total and bounce back in the series.
The five-match T20I series currently stands 2-1 in favour of India. The penultimate game will be played in Pune on Friday (January 31).
