Ace off-spinner R Ashwin became only the second Indian bowler to take 500 Test wickets. He achieved this feat on day 2 of the ongoing third Test between India and England in Rajkot on February 16, 2024.

His 500th scalps proved to be England opener Zak Crawley and it was a timely wicket as Crawley and Ben Duckett had responded to India's first-innings score of 445 with an 89-run stand in just 13 overs.

He broke the partnership by having Crawley top-edging a sweep to Rajat Patidar at short fine leg.

Ashwin had made his India Test debut in 2011 and has picked up 34 five-wicket hauls and eight match hauls of ten or more. Only Anil Kumble, who has 619 wickets, is ahead of Ashwin among Indians on the most wicket-takers tally in Tests.

Ashwin also became only the second bowler after Sri Lanka great Muttiah Muralitharan to take 500 wickets in less than 100 Tests. Overall, Ashwin has taken 25715 balls to reach 500 Test wickets, next only to the legendary Glenn McGrath who required 25528.

Here is the moment when Ashwin took his 500th Test wicket:
