IND v ENG 2024: 'Worry England may become a team that does all the great work only to lose'- Michael Vaughan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan raised concerns about England's ability to win matches despite their strong efforts and impact on the opposition after their defeat in the Vizag Test.

Vaughan stressed the need for a balanced batting approach that combines an aggressive approach with traditional tactics, especially in India's challenging conditions, as they already lost the second Test by 106 runs against India in Vizag earlier this week.

While the England team tested commendable success under the 'Bazball' strategy, the style has also resulted in setbacks like the Ashes defeat last year and now slipped the chance of getting a 2-0 lead in the ongoing five-match Test series in India.

Michael Vaughan wrote in his coulmn for The Telegraph: “England have become a difficult team to criticise too much because they are so good to watch. Every game they play has us all absolutely gripped, and they have improved massively under Ben Stokes.”

He added, “However, I do worry that they might become a team who do all this great work only to not actually win very much. They didn't win the Ashes when they should have done and now they have let India back into a series when they still have a load of big names, including Virat Kohli, to come back.”

Vaughan further warned England that if they continue to bat like they did in Visakhapatnam, the tourists will surely lose the Test series to India.

He explained, “England will not win the series if they bat the way they did in Visakhapatnam. I actually think the batsmen need to take a leaf out of the bowlers' book. With ball in hand, they have been quite traditional at times, aggressive at others, and they have gone up and down the gears in terms of how attacking their fields have been.”

Vaughan signed off by saying, “But the batters look like they only have one way to play. They are in fifth gear from ball one. I don't mind some of them playing like that because they are better for it.”
