England made 578 with Root making 218. Pant top-scored for India, making 91.
Joe Root (218), Ben Stokes (82), and Dom Sibley (87) were the main scorers for England, while Ollie Pope, Dom Bess, and Rory Burns contributed as well, as England folded for 578. For India, Bumrah (3/84) and Ashwin (3/146) were the main wicket-takers, while Ishant and Nadeem picked two wickets apiece.
In reply, India lost Rohit Sharma for 6 runs as Archer had him caught by Buttler. Shubman Gill looked good for his 29 but gave an easy catch to James Anderson off Archer. Then Dom Bess struck twice in quick succession removing Virat Kohli (11) and Ajinkya Rahane (1).
Cheteshwar Pujara (73) and Rishabh Pant added 119 runs for the fifth wicket before Pujara fell in an unlucky manner to Bess. Pant took a liking to Jack Leach and was looking good for his 3rd Test century, but got out on 91 off 85 balls with 9 fours and 5 sixes, going for another six off Dom Bess, who ended the day on 4/55.
However, the talking point remained the dismissal of Rishabh Pant, who unnecessarily gave his wicket away going for an unneeded aerial shot against Bess, who was turning the ball quite a bit.
The cricket fraternity reacted to Rishabh Pant’s entertaining yet unfulfilling knock.
