Shubman Gill has been called India’s newest all-format star by former keeper-batter Parthiv Patel after the Punjab opener hammered a sublime century in the ongoing fourth Test between India and Australia being played in Ahmedabad on March 11, 2023.

Shubman Gill resumed on day three and continued scoring when opportunities presented themselves and scored a magnificent 128 with 12 fours and 1 six, before getting out LBW to Nathan Lyon. He also added 113 runs with Cheteshwar Pujara (42) to stabilize the Indian innings.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Patel said the 23-year-old is definitely India's new all-format star and said that Gill plays differently in all three formats, and said he showed actual Test cricket temperament on day three.

"Shubman Gill is definitely India's new all format star. There is no doubt in that. If you look at his hundred today, we have seen his double hundred in ODIs, the century in T20Is. Everywhere he is batting differently. If you see explosive batting in T20Is, then ODIs you see him batting with tempo. And today, in Test cricket, he showed his temperament as well,” Patel said.

Patel said that he noticed that Shubman Gill didn’t lose his composure even when there was a period where barely any runs came by.

"He has technique, he is a talented player. We have seen all that. But today, he showed actual Test cricket temperament. Runs weren't coming for him and that has never happened in his career. When he played in Australia also, there was a flow of runs for him. It wasn't happening here but he didn't lose his concentration and has played a big innings," said Patel.

Patel said that Gill is in the right headspace at the moment and he was smart when it came to shot selection.

"Absolutely. Everything is going well in his head and that's why he has played such an innings. At the beginning, the strokes he was making, the ball was hard and was coming onto the bat well. So he knew at that time stroke making would be easy. When the game became soft and the ball started to reverse, then he started to pay more attention to singles. When it was an attacking field, he released the pressure with two brilliant boundaries. To me, his thinking is big. The temperament he has shown. He was playing according to the deliveries.

He wasn't trying to force anything new. Cameron Green made two mistakes, he hit two boundaries. When Nathan Lyon came in, he got out in Indore playing a big shot. Yesterday, he hit him for a six and today also when he came onto the attack, Gill played a big shot. So he was looking to put pressure on Lyon," said Patel.
