Shubman Gill became only the third captain to score four centuries in a single Test series.
Speaking about Indian captain Subman Gill, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir stated that there was never any doubt about his skill. He pointed out that players require time to get used to playing cricket internationally, and the team isn't shocked by Gill's performance in the current Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Gill has already surpassed Yashasvi Jaiswal's 712 against England at home just last year, amassing an undefeated 722 runs as the series progresses. With 774 runs in the 1971 away tour of the West Indies and 732 runs at home in 1978-79, Sunil Gavaskar is the only player to have scored more in a single Test series for India.
"No one had any doubt in Shubman Gill's talent. Those who had doubts they only know how to speak cricket, not understand it. Because some people take time in international cricket to blossom. And there is no surprise in this dressing room that Shubman did on this tour," Gambhir told the media.
In the World Test Championship (WTC) era, Gill has now equaled Rohit Sharma's record of nine hundreds, albeit in 67 innings as opposed to Rohit's 69.
Gill bats as a batter, not a captain, according to Gambhir, who felt that Gill did not assume the responsibility of captaincy when batting.
"And honestly, even if he hadn't done it, no one had any doubt in his talent. Those who understand cricket know what kind of talent Shubman Gill has. And the important thing is that he is living up to his expectation, his own talent, and more importantly, the pressure of the captaincy, the burden of the captaincy. I think you can't see anything of that sort when he goes into bat. Because when he goes into bat, he goes as a batsman, not as a captain," he added.
Thanks to his 103 in the Manchester Test, which was Shubman Gill’s fourth in the ongoing series, he has now joined Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar as the only captains in Test history to score four centuries in a single series.
