Rishabh Pant was batting on 37 when he suffered the injury.
India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant has reportedly been advised six weeks of rest after he suffered a fractured foot. The incident happened on day one of the ongoing fourth Test between England and India, which began on July 23 in Manchester.
England had won the toss and chose to bowl first, and Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul added 94 runs, with Jaiswal making 58 and Rahul scoring 46. Sai Sudharsan, who was brought into the XI in place of Karun Nair, made 61 runs. Shubman Gill fell for 12 runs.
However, Sudharsan and Pant were looking good and scoring at a good pace. At 37 runs, Rishabh Pant tried to reverse sweep a yorker from Chris Woakes, and the ball hit him flush on the right foot. The impact sent Rishabh Pant into a world of pain.
He limped away, and when the Indian physio was trying to relieve the pain, Pant was still feeling the sting. The impact area on the foot swelled immediately, and Pant was taken off the field on a medical buggy.
The Indian team management immediately took him to a medical facility for scans, and Indian Express has reported that the keeper-batter has suffered a fracture on the toe of his right foot.
The Indian team management has urged the medical staff to see if Pant can bat after taking a pain reliever if necessary because they are shorthanded by one player in the starting lineup.
“The scan report showed a fracture, and he is ruled out for six weeks. The medical team is trying to see if he can come out to bat again by taking a painkiller. He still needs support to walk, though, and chances of his batting look very bleak,” a source in the BCCI confirmed to Indian Express.
Meanwhile, the selection committee is most likely to add Ishan Kishan to the squad ahead of the fifth Test, as Pant will miss the final Test, which will be played at The Oval from July 31 to August 4.
India is already dealing with an injury issue, with all-rounder Nitesh Kumar Reddy (knee) out for the series and fast bowlers Akash Deep (groin) and Arshdeep Singh (thumb) unavailable for the fourth Test.
This is the second injury Rishabh Pant suffered in this Test series. He also hurt his left index finger while keeping wickets in the Lord’s Test, and Dhruv Jurel had to take over the keeping duties for the rest of the match.
