India defeated England by 336 runs to register first Test win at Edgbaston ground.
After India's historic 336-run victory over England on Sunday, former India head coach Ravi Shastri, who had harshly criticized the choice to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test at Edgbaston, was forced to rethink his mind regarding head coach Gautam Gambhir and his team management.
Before the match, Shastri expressed disbelief on Sky Cricket, saying, “You have the best fast bowler in the world, and you make him sit out after seven days of rest. It’s something very hard to believe. If you look at the run India has had, this becomes a very, very important Test match.”
Jasprit Bumrah was rested for this Test match due to workload management and Akash Deep was included in the playing XI. Akash proved to be the difference, taking 4/88 and 6/99 (10/187) in the match and handing India a 336-run win.
Mohammed Siraj chipped with seven wickets, including 6/70 in the first innings as he and Akash picked 17 wickets out of 20 to fall for England.
When cameras caught Gambhir smiling post-win, Shastri, in the commentary box, acknowledged the turnaround: “Don’t see that smile too often, but he deserves every bit of it. There is no better feeling for a coach than when you bounce back almost immediately to keep the series alive.”
