England needs 536 runs more to win the second Test at Edgbaston.
Marcus Trescothick, the England batting coach, stated that since all three outcomes are still possible on the last day of the match in Birmingham, they are prepared to play for a draw in the current second Test match against India at Edgbaston.
In two innings, India scored 587 and 427/6d, with Shubman Gill leading the way with 269 and 161*. England concluded day four at 72/3, requiring 536 more runs after making 407 in the first innings, giving up a 180-run advantage, and chasing a 608-run total.
India stands seven wickets away from restoring parity at 1-1. England, on the other hand, has a colossal task on their hands.
Trescothick reassured that the hosts are not "stupid" enough to know when to aim for a result or accept a draw in "challenging" circumstances, given the slim chances of England winning.
"I think whenever the situation is challenging, of course it is. I think you know if you get to the point where you can draw the game, of course. We're not stupid enough to understand that, you know, you have to just win or lose," Trescothick told reporters at the end of the 4th day's play.
India seamers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj ran rampant with the new ball, with Siraj dismissing Zak Crawley for a seven-ball duck. Ben Duckett was cleaned up by Akash Deep for 25 runs and then Joe Root also fell to Akash for 6 runs, getting clean bowled.
Trescothick, aware of the threat that India is capable of causing with the new ball, admitted that the final day could play out in anybody's favor.
"You know, there are three results possible in every game that you play. But we have done some things in our time that we are different from what we've done before. So we'll see what happens," he added.
Ollie Pope and Harry Brook will resume the England innings on day five at 72/3.
