England's first innings ended on 407, giving India a lead of 180 runs.
The third day of the ongoing second Test between India and England at Edgbaston on July 4, 2025. England has stumbled to 84/5 in the first session of the day three, before Harry Brook and Jamie Smith got together and ‘Bazballed’ India for two sessions.
Harry Brook made 158 and Jamie Smith remained unbeaten on 184 as they added 303 runs for the sixth wicket. Smith’s century came off just 80 balls and his score is the highest by an England wicket-keeper batter in Tests.
Once Harry Brook was clean bowled by Akash Deep with England on 487, England quickly got bowled out for 407 runs. Mohammed Siraj took 6/70, while Akash Deep took 4/88 for India. The visitors earned a lead of 180 runs.
In their second innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal hammered 28 runs in 22 balls, adding 51 runs for the first wicket with KL Rahul.
Josh Tongue hit Jaiswal on the pads with a delivery in the eighth over of India's second innings. Umpire Sharfuddoula raised his finger as the England cricket team also made an appeal. After a quick deliberation among the Indian batters, Jaiswal went for the review.
Stokes was unhappy, though, since he thought the 15-second timer had passed before Jaiswal could request the review. A heated exchange followed between Stokes and the umpires, with KL Rahul also stepping in to clarify the situation. The Edgbaston crowd reacted with loud boos as the drama unfolded.
Although the replays demonstrated that the ball was striking the stumps, the umpire chose to permit the review. Replays further demonstrated that Stokes was correct, with the ball crashing into the leg stump, with all three indicators—impact, pitching, and wickets—supporting the original decision.
