England made 77/3 at stumps on day 2 in reply to India's 587.
After amassing a huge 587 runs, thanks to Shubman Gill’s brilliant 269 runs, Indian team gave England a huge scare, picking three early wickets by stumps on Day two of the ongoing second Test at Edgbaston.
Apart from captain Gill’s 269, Ravindra Jadeja (89), Yashasvi Jaiswal (87) and Washington Sundar (42) made vital contributions. India’s 587 was the highest conceded by England in the three years under the leadership of head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes.
Following a brilliant burst from seamers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, India answered with three quick wickets, eliminating the England top-order, which included Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, and Ollie Pope, within the first overs.
The Bazballers will try to analyze and find methods to win the match, according to England assistant coach Jeetan Patel, despite being pushed back by the visitors in a game that appears to be headed toward a likely tie.
“100 per cent. I’ve said this many a time in front of all of you, and you keep laughing at me! We will go back in there and have a quick chat about how the day has gone, and what we might look forward to tomorrow. It’s about getting some rest in some guys, some shut-eye, and coming back fresh tomorrow,” Patel told reporters after Day 2’s play.
“We will find another way of trying to get over the line. That’s the beauty of the team we have, the players we have and the belief they have. There are three days of cricket left, lots of cricket to go and on a fast-scoring ground you never know what can happen.
We have two of the greatest batters in the world at the crease now, hopefully they get back in tomorrow and nestle in and cash in on what could be a good day’s cricket,” the Kiwi added.
India all-rounder Jadeja, who contributed a useful 89 during his 203-run partnership with Gill for the sixth wicket, dismissed Patel's assertions, stating that what counts in the coming days is how well the team performs on the field.
“In press conference, you can talk whatever you want to talk. That’s none of my business. But, at the end of the day, you have to go out there and perform and take those 20 wickets. That’s all that matters,” Jadeja told in response to Patel’s claim.
The second Test is poised at very interesting point with three days to go and all depends on England’s first innings total.
