He became only the sixth Indian captain to slam a double hundred in the longest format of the game, joining MAK Pataudi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli in the elite list.
Gill resumed Day 2 on 114* and reached the double ton in 311 balls. He broke a plethora of records on the way, becoming the first Asian captain to have scored a double century in a Test match in England.
The lanky right-hander also set a new record for highest score by an Indian captain in a Test innings in England, surpassing the 179 scored by Mohammad Azharuddin in 1990.
With this knock, Gill became only the third Indian batter after Gavaskar and Rahul Dravid to smash a double hundred in England. This double hundred was also the highest score by an Indian captain away from home, overtaking Kohli’s 200 against West Indies at North Sound in 2016.
The ongoing England tour marks the start of Shubman Gill’s tenure as Test captain. On his Test captaincy debut, the 25-year-old played a fine knock of 147 at Headingley last week.
