Bumrah was one of the three changes India made for the second Test at Edgbaston.
Legendary fast bowlers, Stuart Broad and Dale Steyn, have questioned the Indian team management for their decision to rest Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test against England at Edgbaston after having a week off from action.
The visitors made a host of changes for the match with Bumrah being the big name missing. The plan was always going to make the ace pacer play three Tests and India coach Gautam Gambhir had said that it won't be altered despite the loss in the series opener at Headingley.
However, Broad wasn't in favour of resting Bumrah for the match, which is important in the context of the series.
While speaking on Sky Sports, Broad also said Bumrah shouldn’t have revealed how many Tests he would play on the tour of England.
“A week is a very good time off for a pacer. [Bumrah’s omission] does surprise me, and what also surprised me was him saying before the series that he would only play three of the five Tests," the former England pacer stated.
“You keep those cards close to your chest and play each week as it comes. They will want Bumrah at Lord’s because of the movement you can get through the air," he added.
On the other hand, Steyn took to social media platform X and expressed disbelief at India’s decision to rest Bumrah from the second Test against England.
“So Portugal have the best striker in the world in Ronaldo and they chose not to play him. Thats madness. That’s like India having Bumrah and choosing not to play, umm, him… wait, oh, no, what! shit I’m confused,” the South African great tweeted.
Ever since Bumrah sustained a back spasm in the Sydney Test against Australia, the Indian team management has been extra careful about managing his workload.
As a result of that injury, the right-arm quick missed the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the initial few matches of the IPL 2025 season for Mumbai Indians.
Ahead of the England tour, Bumrah revealed that he himself requested the BCCI not to consider him for Test captaincy after Rohit Sharma's retirement, as he would not be able to play all five Tests due to workload management.
