India have lost seven matches out of 8 while one ended in a draw at the Edgbaston ground.
In light of the team's difficulties with the lower order, India captain Shubman Gill has called on his specialist batsmen to assume greater responsibility in the second Test match. In the first Test match, the Indian side failed to build on a strong batting performance and fell apart in both innings.
Gill admitted to the team's shortcomings, conceding that India's tail lacks the run-scoring ability often seen in the lower order of other Test-playing nations.
Instead of whining about their tail problems, Gill stated that they acknowledged the problem and needed to make up for those runs in the top order itself.
"It's been one of the things that we always talk about, especially with our batting depth, that our lower order sometimes isn't able to contribute as much as the other teams. But having said that, you can also look at the other side as well. I was batting on 147, and the way I got out, maybe I could have scored 50 more runs in partnership with Rishabh [Pant]," Shubman Gill said in the pre-match press conference ahead of the 2nd Test.
"If you get a good ball and you get out, that's fine. But once you are set and you don't really have that much depth in your batting order, maybe the top order could take a little bit more responsibility and bat completely out of the game," Gill added.
The Indian team is likely to make a few crucial changes to their line-up for the second Test. Nitish Kumar Reddy is expected to come in for Shardul Thakur, who underperformed with the bat in the first match and was not utilized much with the ball either.
Also, India is expected to go in with two spinners, including Ravindra Jadeja. Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar are in the race for the second spinner role in the India XI.
