Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped a total of 4 catches in the Leeds Test match.
Despite hitting a century in the opening innings of the first Test match against England, Yashasvi Jaiswal faced criticism. Many supporters were outraged by his fielding performance, which helped England batters score 165 extra runs as Jaiswal dropped a total of four catches in both innings.
At Headingley, Jaiswal was then made fun of by England supporters, who teasingly rejoiced whenever Jaiswal fielded a successful ball.
The left-hander is seen jokingly dancing and grinning as England approaches the 371-run goal in the footage that went viral online following the end of the first of five Test matches in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Ben Duckett, who led the charge in the chase with 149 runs, was one of the players who survived because of Jaiswal's hesitations on the field. A middle-order stutter gave India hope, but Joe Root (53*) and debutant Jamie Smith (44*) closed out the match with an unbeaten 71-run partnership.
Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill downplayed the dropped catches, despite expecting better from the Indian team, and asked them to raise their standards.
"Catches do get dropped. The best fielders have missed catches. None of them did it on purpose," India coach Gautam Gambhir told reporters in the post-match press conference.
Shubman Gill's tenure as India Test captain didn't get off to a good start. He said that their loss was not primarily caused by missed catches and hitting errors.
"A brilliant Test, we had our chances. Dropped catches, lower order not contributing cost us. Yesterday, we were thinking of giving them 430, but our last wickets fell for 25," Gill noted.
The second Test between England and India will begin on July 2 in Birmingham.
