Gill's 127* and Jaiswal's 101 powered India to 359/3 at stumps on day 1.
India's five-Test tour of England got off to a spectacular start at Headingley, as Yashasvi Jaiswal and new captain Shubman Gill scored imposing hundreds to lead the team to a commanding 359/3 at stumps.
Even while the domination on the field was evident, the pyrotechnics weren't just on the field; Navjot Singh Sidhu's brutal destruction of former England captain Michael Vaughan's forecast lit up social media.
Vaughan had boldly declared before the series that "they (India) arrive again to lose," predicting a 3-1 victory for England due to India's inexperience and the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Sidhu, however, did not mince words in his response as India swept ahead with their highest-ever opening-day Test score in England.
“Fools grow without watering. Michael Vaughan, your predictions. They’re always wrong,” Sidhu thundered in a video shared by Star Sports.
He brought up Vaughan's failed prediction from the 2020–21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in which India shocked Australia with a 2-1 victory after being written off owing to injuries. He also brought up Vaughan's recent misstep in the WTC final, where South Africa defeated Australia in spite of the Englishman's disqualification.
Taking a dig at England’s toothless attack, he said, “Look at your bowling attack. They’re pedestrians. I mean, three of the Indian batsmen are stepping out and hitting them like spinners. Boss, noise proves nothing. Even a hen, while laying an egg, cackles as if she’s laying an asteroid.”
Here is the video:
Gill with 127* on his captaincy debut and Jaiswal’s 101 were the highlights of India’s innings on day one. The two added 129 for the third wicket before Rishabh Pant (65*) took charge in a ruthless final session, as India finished day 1 on 359/3.
