Shubman Gill, the captain of Team India, has come under fire for the color of his socks on the first day of the first Test match against England in Leeds.
Although the ICC rule stipulates that socks should be white, cream, or light grey for Test matches, the right-handed batter wore black socks while batting. In ODIs, the same three colours are permissible, as well as the base colour of the playing trousers.
As per Article 19.45 of the ICC rules on clothing and equipment, a player is required to wear socks of the aforementioned colors.
Gill might face consequences, though, for donning black socks. The Indian captain might receive a demerit point and a punishment of 10–20% of his match fee because the offense is probably only of Level 1. However, if his breach was accidental – for instance, if his socks were wet or unusable – he might avoid a penalty.
