Rahane will continue to play for Mumbai as a batter.
Veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane has relinquished Mumbai’s captaincy ahead of the upcoming domestic season. The 37-year-old, who led Mumbai to the Ranji Trophy title last year, will continue to play for the side.
Rahane announced his decision to quit captaincy through a post on social media platform 'X' (formerly Twitter).
“Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season, I believe it’s the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I have decided not to continue in the captaincy role,” Rahane wrote.
“I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player and will continue my journey with MCA to help us win more trophies. Looking forward to the season,” he added.
Under Rahane’s leadership, Mumbai also won the Irani Trophy in 2024-25 season. Having fallen out of favor with the national selectors, he is set to feature in his 19th first-class season for Mumbai.
Rahane had informed the Mumbai Cricket Association of his decision, and the selectors will soon name his successor.
