Ayush Mhatre was made the vice-captain of Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad.
India’s T20 World Cup 2026-winning Suryakumar Yadav has been snubbed from the Mumbai squad that the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced for their upcoming Ranji Trophy 2026-27 encounter.
Suryakumar Yadav had made himself available for a full Ranji Trophy season after being dropped from the Indian T20I squad. However, the MCA opted not to select the experienced batter.
In a post shared on social media, the report mentioned the squad of 16 players for the opener, and Surya's name was missing from the list.
Siddesh Lad has been named the Mumbai captain for the upcoming domestic cricket season, and young Ayush Mhatre was named his deputy. The squad also has stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan. Musheer Khan, Hardik Tamore, Sharma Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Tushar Deshpande, and Atharva Ankolekar.
Mumbai will start their Ranji Trophy campaign on October 11, through the match against Chandigarh.
"We wanted to give chances to a few youngsters. It’s not like we won't consider Suryakumar Yadav in the future for the Ranji Trophy, but he has to play a few red-ball matches," says Mumbai chief selector Rajesh Pawar, as per the Times of India.
On the other hand, Shardul Thakur, who played for Mumbai in six matches in the last edition’s Ranji Trophy, will miss at least the initial few matches.
"Shardul suffered a hand injury when he was struck by a ball that Ayush Mhatre drove towards him. The hand injury is likely to see him miss a few matches," a source in the MCA told Times of India.
Last year in the Ranji Trophy, Shardul had a strike rate of 43, taking 13 wickets in 10 innings.
