CWC 2019: Australia – COC Players’ Ratings

CWC 2019: Australia – COC Players’ Ratings

Australia kept winning in the tournament despite not playing their best cricket.

By Jatin Sharma - 13 Jul, 2019

The defending champions Australia’s journey in the ICC World Cup 2019 came to an end in the semi-finals as they were handed a humiliating defeat by 8-wickets in Birmingham. The Aaron Finch-led side played good cricket and despite losing to India and South Africa in league stages, were the first team to qualify for the knockouts.

However, injuries and out of form players hampered their game, as they were not as dominating as they should have been in the tournament, but they still managed to win games from the brink of defeat against West Indies and Pakistan. This showed that they looked good to defend their title until India and Proteas opened up chinks in their armor, which was exploited by England in the semis.

Keeping their performance in the consideration, Team COC presents to you the Players’ ratings for the Australian team in the ICC World Cup 2019.

DAVID WARNER- 10/10

David Warner made a terrific comeback into the international cricket after a year’s ban by slamming 647 runs in 10 matches with three centuries and three half-centuries with a best score of 166. Though his strike rate was just 89.36, he gave Australia assured starts and wanted to remain till the end. Bowlers must be aware of the newly energized Warner now.

MITCHELL STARC- 10/10

Mitchell Starc bettered his haul of wickets from the last edition, as he picked 27 wickets in 10 matches with two fifers to his name. the left-arm fast bowler was deadly at the top swinging the ball and then bowling searing yorkers in the death. His delivery to get rid of Ben Stokes in the league stages may have been the best yorker bowled in the tournament.

ALEX CAREY- 8/10

Australia has found a gem in Alex Carey. Not only he is extremely good behind the stumps but is great with the bat as well, and though the team realized that sending him up the order was a good thing, a little late; it worked nicely for them. Carey has definitely put himself in contention for the upcoming Ashes series.

AARON FINCH- 8/10

Aaron Finch must be proud of the way he led the team in the tournament. He was amazing with the bat making 507 runs with 2 centuries to his name, including the highest score of 153. His captaincy was very good and he used his resources to the optimum. Finch led from the front and his batting was one of the reasons Australia made it into the knockouts without many problems.

STEVE SMITH- 6/10

Steve Smith’s comeback may not have been as great as Warner’s, but he did well for himself. 379 runs in 10 matches with four half-centuries can be termed a good haul for the former Australia captain, and his innings against England and West Indies were one of the grittiest ones seen in the World Cup.

PAT CUMMINS- 6/10

Much was expected of Pat Cummins in the tournament given that he was coming off a very good series against Pakistan and India. He did manage to pick 14 wickets in 10 matches and had an economy of 4.95, but something was missing for the right-hand fast bowler. He proved to be a good foil for Starc, who tore through opposition batting lineups.

JASON BEHRENDORFF- 5/10

Jason Behrendorff made a good impact in World Cup, picking a fifer against England at Lord’s, but could manage just four more wickets in the other matches. Behrendorff provided Finch with a better third bowling option after Starc and Cummins and he did his work nicely.

USMAN KHAWAJA- 5/10

Usman Khawaja made 316 runs in 9 matches with two half-centuries. He did his job to perfection, providing supporting roles to Warner, Finch, and Smith. It took a hamstring injury for the left-hander to miss the semi-finals where England tore through the Australian top order and Finch and co. missed Khawaja a lot.

NATHAN COULTER-NILE- 2/10

Nathan Coulter-Nile will always be remembered for his knock of 92 against West Indies when he and Steve Smith helped Australia get out a big hole and his rebuilding innings helped Australia put up a fighting total on the board.

MARCUS STOINIS- 2/10

Marcus Stoinis battled fitness issues throughout the tournament and managed 87 runs and 7 wickets in 8 matches. Much was expected from the all-rounder but he failed to rise to the occasion thanks to form and injury issues.

NATHAN LYON- 2/10

Nathan Lyon played four games and picked 3 wickets. He was picked over Adam Zampa as Australia needed someone to stall the flow of runs in the middle overs.

KANE RICHARDSON- 2/10

Kane Richardson realized his dream of playing the World Cup for Australia but got only two games in which picked an impressive five wickets with best of 3/47 against Sri Lanka.

GLENN MAXWELL- 1/10

Glenn Maxwell might be the biggest disappointment for the Australian team as he managed just 177 runs in 10 matches with no fifties. He couldn’t manage to step up to the plate whenever the team needed and couldn’t manage to pick a wicket as well. The big show was a no-show in the World Cup.

SHAUN MARSH- 1/10

Shaun Marsh played just two matches and scored 26 runs before a Pat Cummins fast delivery broke his forearm and ended his tournament.

PETER HANDSCOMB- 1/10

Peter Handscomb was brought in for the semi-finals but managed just 4 runs.

ADAM ZAMPA- 1/10

Adam Zampa played four games and picked 5 wickets in the tournament, but failed to gain the confidence of his team after some disappointing outings.
