The second semifinal of the ICC World Cup 2019 saw England dominate arch rivals Australia and marched into the finals to face New Zealand on July 14 at Lord’s in the finals. This means that after 1996, the cricketing world will see a team become World Champions, which hasn’t won the title previously.

Aaron Finch won the toss and chose to bat first, a decision which might have been based on previous teams winning after batting first at Edgbaston. However, Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer had some other ideas, as Woakes removed Warner (9) and Handscomb (4), while Archer got rid of Finch for (0). Steve Smith (85) and Alex Carey (46) added 103 runs to bring stability to the innings. After they fell, Maxwell (22) and Mitchell Starc (29) took Australia to 223.

For England, Woakes (3/20), Rashid (3/54) and Archer (2/32) were the best bowlers.

Many of the fans must have thought that England might find it tough to chase here given the past matches, but Jason Roy’s 85 in 65 balls with 5 sixes and 9 fours quelled those fears. Bairstow (34), Root (39*) and Morgan (40*) ensured no further casualties happened and England romped home victors by 8 wickets, making 226/2 in just 32.1 overs.

They will now face New Zealand in the finals at Lord’s on July 14.

Cricket fraternity was amazed at how England made short work of the defending champions on a pitch that was considered to be a hard one to chase on. They praised the home team for their thumping win and we have some of the best tweets for you.
