CWC 2019: Jacques Kallis urges South Africa to emulate England after their World Cup humiliation

CWC 2019: Jacques Kallis urges South Africa to emulate England after their World Cup humiliation

South Africa lost all hopes with Pakistan defeat to qualify for semi-finals.

South Africa yet again went down in the ongoing World Cup 2019 on Sunday, 23rd June, when they were thrashed by 49 runs by Pakistan at Lord's to invite an early exit from the ICC cricket event.

With the Lord’s defeat, South Africa now have no hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals of the ongoing showpiece event with two games still to play in the tournament.

Following miserable early exit from the World Cup 2019, South Africa great Jacques Kallis has urged Faf du Plessis and his troops to learn a lesson from England, given their one-day international revival since their heartbreaking exit from 2015 edition of the tournament.

Since their woeful first-round exit, England has made a tremendous improvement in the 50-over game and they now are title favorites this time and Kallis urged South Africa to use their disappointment in building the team for the future like the "Three Lions".

Kallis wrote in his column for ICC, “England used the disappointment of their performances in 2015 to rebuild their team and totally change their mentality and approach to one-day cricket.”

He continued, “England now play without fear and aren’t afraid to make mistakes. For me, South Africa have approached things too defensively at this tournament and they need to attack each match with much more positivity going forward.”

Meanwhile, the legendary all-rounder believes that the Proteas side doesn’t need to make changes in their team rather they need to be more considered and thoughtful for a turnaround next time.

He explained, “You don’t need to make wholesale changes, England are still captained by Eoin Morgan, as they were four years ago. A total clean-out is just not the way ahead. We need to be more considered and thoughtful. South Africa have some great young players in their 20s (Kagiso Rabada, 24, Lungi Ngidi, 23, Andile Phehlukwayo,23, and Aiden Markram, 24) and they can be the foundation for the future.”

Kallis concluded, “The first thing that needs to be looked at is the brand of cricket South Africa are playing. England are proof how quickly things can change in four years, so long as you have the right approach.”
