New Zealand posted 320/5 with centuries by Will Young and Tom Latham.
The first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 got underway at the National Stadium in Karachi on February 19, 2025. Pakistan took on New Zealand, and the hosts captain, Mohammad Rizwan, won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Will Young stroked the first century of the tournament, making 107 with 12 fours and 1 six, while Tom Latham made 118* with 10 fours and 3 sixes. Glenn Phillips provided the death-over fireworks as he made 61 in 39 balls with three fours and four sixes.
New Zealand posted 320/5 in 50 overs. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf took two wickets apiece for Pakistan.
Set 321 to win, Pakistan was expected to go big from the start. Fakhar Zaman couldn’t open the batting as he was off the field during the New Zealand innings due to an injury. Saud Shakeel and Babar Azam opened the innings, with Shakeel falling for six runs.
Babar and Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan then played sedately as New Zealand put the pressure with disciplined bowling. Mohammad Rizwan tried to break the shackles on the last ball of the batting powerplay off Will O’Rourke.
He cut the short and wide ball from the Kiwi bowler towards the backward point. The ball was flying in the air, but Glenn Phillips just plucked the ball out of thin air with his body in the air. The catch was taken in fingers, behind his body by Phillips as Rizwan went back for three runs in 14 balls.
