Hazlewood bowled only one over on Day 4 of the Gabba Test.
Cricket Australia confirmed that the scans revealed a strain in his right calf. Hazlewood bowled only one over on Tuesday (December 17) after suffering the injury during training in the lead-up to the day's play.
Hazlewood's entry onto the field was delayed at the start of play. His bowling appeared laboured, with speeds barely touching 131kph. His first ball was a wide long hop, which was dispatched by KL Rahul.
During the subsequent drinks break, Hazlewood had a discussion with skipper Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, and physio Nick Jones before walked off the field.
"Josh Hazlewood has sustained a right sided calf strain which will prevent him from playing any further part in Test match against India in Brisbane," CA’s statement read.
"He sustained the injury during the warm-up this morning and after bowling one over was unable to continue. He is likely to miss the remainder of the Test series. A squad replacement will be made in due course."
Scott Boland is the most likely candidate to replace Hazlewood for the last two Test matches. Boland had claimed five wickets in the pink-ball Test at the Adelaide Oval when Hazlewood was ruled out due to a "low-grade left side injury."
Ahead of the Brisbane Test, Australian captain Pat Cummins had admitted that it was a difficult decision to leave Boland out of the playing XI, though he hinted at latter’s potential involvement in the series.
“[We told him] it's about preparing for the MCG because there's a good chance we might need you,” Cummins had told reporters.
“History suggests there's always some form of natural attrition throughout a Test series. A good thing [is], he's probably played a Test earlier in the series than he maybe thought. Showed that his standard's still super high. [It's] about trying to set him up for the last two Test matches.”
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy is currently tied at 1-1. While India won the series opener in Perth by 295 runs, Australia bounced back to win the second Test in Adelaide by 10 wickets,
Aiming to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series, the hosts rely on Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Nathan Lyon amidst intermittent rain delays in the ongoing Gabba Test.
