India defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets in Dubai in Group A match on September 14.
The Pakistani team waited on the ground for the Indian team to come out to shake hands, but went back when the Men in Blue remained in their dressing room. Later, Salman Ali Agha, the Pakistan captain, skipped the post-match presentation.
Now, a senior BCCI official has stated that shaking hands at the conclusion of a cricket match is merely a gesture of goodwill; however, given the Pahalgam incident in April and the lack of such a sense between India and Pakistan, the Indian players were under no obligation to do so.
A PTI report claims that as opposition parties in India on social media erupted in protest against the game, the BCCI and the team management met to discuss their position.
“Look, if you read the rule book, there is no specification about shaking hands with the opposition. It is a goodwill gesture and a sort of convention, not law, that is followed globally across the sporting spectrum. If there is no law, then the Indian cricket team isn’t bound to shake hands with an opposition with whom there is a history of a strained relationship," the BCCI official told PTI.
The tension between India and Pakistan was so great during Sunday's play that referee Andy Pycroft was given the team sheets instead of the captains' customary exchange.
In a protest statement in Urdu, Pakistan team manager Naved Cheema said that Pycroft had told Salman Ali Agha not to shake hands with Suryakumar Yadav.
