Abhishek Sharma was India's stand-out performer during the Asia Cup 2025.
Abhishek Sharma was the stand-out performer for Team India during their recent Asia Cup 2025 triumph in the United Arab Emirates.
The left-handed opener took the opposition bowling attack to cleaners right through the continental event, amassing 314 runs from seven matches at a strike rate of 200 and an average of 44.85.
While Sharma’s T20I career has got off to a blistering start, his performance in diverse global conditions remains to be seen.
Abhishek’s next challenge will be the tour of Australia, where the Men in Blue are slated to play five T20Is from October 29 to November 8.
With three weeks remaining for the blockbuster series, South African legend AB de Villiers has backed Abhishek Sharma to thrive in the conditions Down Under.
“Abhishek Sharma is in the form of the life, some are saying he is the best opening batter in the world right now in this format. Will be great to see what he can get over there in Australia. I think he will enjoy the conditions because there’s quite a bit of bounce," de Villiers noted on his YouTube channel.
“He likes freeing up his arms over the off-side, opening up the blade, covering the point to third man boundary, hitting sixes over there. He can also clear up or open up the leg side as well. All-round player, fantastic batter to watch," the former Proteas captain added.
Recently, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s assistant coach Simon Helmot attributed Abhishek’s success to a change he made last year.
“It’s more about his stance. He’s adjusted and slightly… He’s become more relaxed at the crease, not as tense and rigid. He’s able to access both sides of the ground. He’s able to get in really good positions. Doesn’t over-complicate the way in which he plays. He’s quite still at the point of impact," Helmot said while speaking to The Indian Express.
“He plays the ball quite late. He presents a wonderful bat face. His head is in a beautiful, steady position. He watches the ball intently and can get himself in easy positions to be able to access various sides of the ground… It’s more mental for Abhi. He’s always been touted with lots of ability and skill, and now we’re seeing that start to flourish. That comes with mental toughness, a greater understanding of your own game," he added.
Abhishek Sharma has played 24 T20Is so far, scoring 849 runs at an incredible strike rate of 196.07, including two hundreds and five fifties. Despite being aggressive in his approach, the southpaw has managed to maintain an impressive average of 36.91 as well.
