AUS v IND 2020-21: "Lara hugged me," Gavaskar recalls how West Indian legend celebrated India's triumph in Australia

Team India clinched the four-match series 2-1 to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar revealed how West Indies great Brian Lara celebrated India's historic Test series win against Australia and said that Lara hugged him and screamed, 'We won, we won'.

After the batting debacle at Adelaide and with Virat Kohli not being available for the rest of the series, Team India’s chances of clinching the series were next to impossible. 

However, Team India led by Ajinkya Rahane regrouped to put together three stellar performances and despite being battered and bruised showed great resilience and application to register historic victories at Melbourne (MCG) and Gabba, Brisbane.

The team also earned a famous draw in Sydney.

Team India’s series victory over Australia was one of the greatest comebacks to be recorded in history and was lauded by the entire cricket fraternity all including Sunil Gavaskar who was elated after India defeated Australia by 3 wickets in the series-decider at their fortress, The Gabba in Brisbane to clinch the Test series 2-1 and retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the second time in a row in Australia.

Sunil Gavaskar however, was in Australia for the entire tour and had signed up for a commentary stint with Channel 7, the official broadcasters of the series in Australia.

Gavaskar revealed how Brain Lara celebrated India’s victory during Channel 7's farewell party and said that Lara came to him and hugged and expressed his happiness of India’s win.

“At the Channel 7 farewell party on the last day, I walked around the room with my glass raised, and every Australian there cheered.

Then Brian Charles Lara (fellow commentator during the series) came, hugged me, and screamed, ‘We won, we won’. What a series! Will Cherish these memories for whatever is left of my life. I am still over the moon and still in orbit!” Sunil Gavaskar told TOI. 

With the 2-1 series win, India registered their second successive Test series victory against Australia in their own backyard.
