The second day of the first day-night Test match between India and Australia proved to be quite an interesting one and belonged to the bowlers from both sides. India had resumed their innings from 233/6 and Australian bowlers soon had the upper hand in the duel.

India could only add 11 more runs to their overnight score before being bowled out for 244 runs. Mitchell Starc picked 4/53, Pat Cummins took 3/48, while Lyon and Hazlewood got a wicket each.

If Australia thought that their openers would have a better day than their Indian counterparts, they were mistaken, as Jasprit Bumrah removed both Joe Burns and Matthew Wade for 8 runs each. Then R Ashwin got into action, taking the huge wicket of Steve Smith for 1 run in 29 balls, and then catching Travis Head off his own bowling.

Debutant Cameron Green (11) looked good for a short while, but then hit a short one from Ashwin towards mid-wicket where Virat Kohli picked a beauty of a catch. Marnus Labuschagne played nicely for his 47, but Umesh Yadav got one ball to keep low and trapped him LBW, leaving Australia 111/6.

However, captain Tim Paine (73* with 10 fours in 99 balls), with the help of Starc (15) and Lyon (10), took the Australian total to a decent looking 191, before the innings wrapped up.

R Ashwin was the pick of Indian bowlers with 4/55, while Umesh Yadav justified his selection with 3/40, while Bumrah picked two wickets.

India had to bat out 6 overs before the end of the day’s play. However, Pat Cummins managed to remove Prithvi Shaw for 4 runs in those overs. Jasprit Bumrah came out as the night-watchman and survived the remaining overs as India ended the day on 9/1.

The cricket fraternity was elated at the way Indian bowlers earned a good lead for the team and lauded their efforts.
