India suffered a huge blow in the latter half of the first day of the ongoing first Test against Australia in Adelaide on December 17. Indian skipper Virat Kohli was dismissed at a crucial juncture via run out, ending India’s hopes of ending the day on a high.

Kohli had won the toss and chosen to bat first. India lost both openers for the score of 32 runs with Prithvi Shaw making 0 and Mayank Agarwal making 17 runs. The Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara (43) added 68 runs for the third wicket before Lyon got rid of Pujara.

He was joined by vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane at the crease after that. The Indian skipper had gritted his way through to 74 with 8 fours to his name in 180 balls when an unfortunate run call from Rahane ended a promising knock by Kohli.

On the last ball of the 77th over being bowled by Lyon, Rahane hit a firm drive to Josh Hazlewood in covers and called Kohli for a quick single. Unfortunately, the ball reached the fielder quicker than Rahane expected and he decided to send Kohli back, who had trusted his partner’s call and ran hard to reach the striker’s end.

The call came very late for Kohli to stop and return, and Lyon had disturbed the stumps by then. Kohli went for 74 runs and with the second new ball looming, in an unlucky end to his brilliant innings.

Rahane knew that he made a big mistake and apologized to Kohli right after his dismissal. Rahane himself was then dismissed LBW by Mitchell Starc in the first over with the second new ball, bringing his innings to a close at 42 in 92 balls with 1 six and 2 fours.
