Australia defeated India by 66 runs in the first ODI at Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney and took a lead of 1-0 in the three-match series.
Earlier, Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. David Warner and Aaron Finch gave a good start of 156 runs in 27 overs. Mohammad Shami broke this stand by dismissing Warner for 69 runs and later Finch brought up his 17th ODI hundred. He got out for 114 runs off Bumrah's bowling. Steve Smith changed his gears and kept on scoring runs all over the park and brought up his hundred in just 62 balls. Glenn Maxwell also smashed 45 runs off 19 balls and Australia finished on 374/6 in 50 overs.
In reply, India also started well as Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank Agarwal scored 50 runs in just 4 overs. Josh Hazlewood dismissed Mayank for 22 runs. Captain Virat Kohli also got a good start but he couldn't convert and threw his wicket away off Hazlewood's bowling. In the same over Shreyas Iyer also got out, and after a few overs KL Rahul also fell cheaply and at 101/4, India was in big trouble.
Shikhar Dhawan and Hardik Pandya rebuilt the innings and their 128 runs partnership kept India in the chase but both the batsmen got out in the quest of quick runs and eventually India finished on 308/8 and fell short of the target by 66 runs. For Australia, Adam Zampa took 4 wickets while for India, Hardik Pandya played 90 runs knock.
